Can I choose a (geographic) region for my DB?

Hello,

Can I choose a specific region for my database? GDPR policies impose it.

That is available and running for our Enterprise customers only. The currently supported regions are Southeast Asia and Western Europe. A specific cloud region in AWS or GCP is possible and has a bit of lead time.

It would be great if Pro databases were available in Southeast Asia and / or Western Europe too. While I appreciate that multi-region is an enterprise feature, I’m sure I’m not the only customer who would greatly appreciate lower latency outside the US.

The inability to choose a region is what made us skip Bit.io for our prod db needs.

I don’t understand why data sovereignty/security and minimising worldwide latency are considered “enterprise” features and not a basic customer choice (a database setting).

Hey all, we totally understand the desire for additional primary regions.

In short, it’s cost related. bit.io has the technical capability to run in any region, but due to lessened demand for regions outside of us-central-1, it has not yet become cost-effective for us to provide any region at the free/Pro tier. Because Enterprise customers have committed spend, it can become cost-effective. We’re continually reevaluating this and hope to bring more regions to the free and Pro tiers soon, so please keep an eye out for future announcements. We will also monitor this thread for feedback on next regions to prioritize. Thank you!

Its not just a “nice to have” feature. As a German company we are required by law to host our data in the EU. So by that bit.io is not GDPR compliant.

I suspect this is a self-fulfilling prophecy. For a number of use cases, mostly involving PII, customers in the EU have a data residency requirement that the database is hosted within the EU.

Even if there’s no PII, having the database closer to the user(s) is still preferable from a performance perspective. While I don’t want to pretend that I know more about your business than you, I suspect allowing Pro users to provision databases in the EU is worthwhile in the medium to long term.

Hi,

Totally agree.

The service looks great. However not having the option to store data in Europe (ideally the UK) means it likely can’t be used. Both Planetscale and Neon (which you compare yourself to) do have regions in Europe.

UK, please

Like others have mentioned, not being able to put you data inside EU is a non-starter for any European company.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! This helps us a lot with prioritization.

Another issue is latency. If you are in the UK and the database is hosted in the US, the latency can be a huge problem. I moved to bit.io but this is a reason I’m moving away from it.

@ataltech thanks for the feedback! We definitely appreciate that there are multiple advantages to offering hosting in other regions and that latency is highly dependent on physical location and key for many use cases (we’ve actually built a tool for exploring cloud datacenter latency and blogged about it).

Unfortunately, for now, the status remains as discussed earlier in this thread.

I’m really hesitant to move to bit.io because this barrier stands in my way
